How to Choose the Right Wheel Weight

Selecting the right wheel weight starts with knowing your wheel type. Clip-on weights attach to the outer flange of a steel wheel in profiles like AW, MC, EN, and FNMC. Each profile fits a specific rim shape, so matching the correct clip style matters.

For alloy and custom wheels, stick-on wheel weights mount on the inner barrel behind the spokes, keeping the rim face clean. For rear tires on a tractor, trailer, or heavy truck, balancing beads can self-adjust as conditions change.

What size wheel weight do I need?

Most wheel balancers display the required correction in grams or ounce increments. A common conversion: 28 grams equals about 1 oz. Passenger vehicles typically need lighter oz weights, while trucks and rear wheels may require heavier options for routine service.

What's the difference between clip-on and stick-on wheel weights?

Clip-on weights attach to the outer edge of a steel wheel using a spring clip and are fast to install. Stick-on wheel weights use adhesive foil tape to mount on the inner barrel of alloy rims, keeping the wheel face clean.

How do I choose between lead, steel, and zinc wheel weights?

Lead wheel weights are dense and cost-effective. Steel is lead-free and uses the same clip profiles, though pieces may be slightly larger for a given weight. Why do wheel weights fall off?
