The Hamaton Flexible Skiving Knife (HAM-3154A) is a specialized automotive tool designed for tire repair preparation and finishing.  It is primarily utilized by technicians to cut, trim, and flush-remove excess tire repair plug rubber, sidewall rope, or patch materials from the tire tread and inner liner.

This skiving knife features a flexible steel structure with a round tip. This design allows the blade to bend and flex against the tire's contours, ensuring a flush finish without accidentally puncturing or gouging the rubber interior.

A skiving knife is used in tire repair to trim and smooth rubber materials. Standard utility knives have rigid blades that can easily gouge or slice too deeply into the tire's structural casing. A flexible skiving knife bends to match the tire's natural curve, allowing the technician to shave the rubber perfectly flat without damaging the surrounding tire.

  • Trimming Repair Plugs and Stems: After inserting a combination repair unit (plug-patch) or a filler strip into a puncture, the excess rubber sticks out. The knife cuts this flush with the tire tread or inner liner.
  • Removing Damaged Rubber: During the initial prep, it cuts away loose, jagged, or oxidized rubber around the injury. This creates a clean, solid channel for the patch material.
  • Smoothing Sidewall Repairs: For section repairs, it skives (shaves) down the vulcanized repair rope or patch edges to match the original contour of the tire sidewall.
  • Preventing Future Failures: Leaving excess rubber from a repair creates a high spot. Inside the tire, this can cause the patch to catch and peel off. Outside the tire, it can snag on the road and pull the plug out.
